Carson Daly addresses mental health issues in a new segment of tonight's show, Mind Matters
Carson Daly details the "moments of intense panic" he experienced while hosting The Voice.
The 48-year-old television personality recently told USA Today about an anxiety disorder (GAD) diagnosis and said being open about his struggles had put him in a "much better place."
"You may know me from MTV or as a celebrity, whatever you think of me. You may think that my life is perfect. I have kids. I always look happy on TV or when you see me on The Voice. But that's not how it works,' said Daly at the exit. "Not like that."
"On The Voice, when I went live on Monday night, my right hand was in my right pocket most of the time, and I held my thighs waiting for the panic to pass," he added. Although her panic attacks and hyperventilation can come and go, Daly says she's "on the right track" and that sharing her story and learning more about anxiety has helped her.
"Once you find out that other people have [GAD] — that it's a diagnosed thing and there's a whole lot of psychology and physiology behind it — you have context, and I think learning about everything, talking about it, exploring it, just unmasks," he said.
Daly will continue to share her personal experiences with anxiety in a new summer segment on the Today show called Mind Matters, which kicks off Tuesday. He told the United States that the show would allow him to remove the stigma of mental health issues.
I accidentally shared my story one day, and now this mental health space has become a place for me on NBC News and as part of the show and the creation of Mind Matters to discover other stories from people like me, famous or not." he says.
"Just inspiring," continued Dali. "I've never had a problem with clinical depression ... but doing Mind Matters allowed me to talk to people struggling with suicidal thoughts or depression, and I was impressed with the courage people had."
