Patti Lupone's win marked her third Tony Award, having previously won Best Actress in a Musical for her roles in Evita (1980) and Gypsy (2008).

The 73-year-old actress and singer took home the Best Performance in a Leading Role in a Musical at the 75th Tony Awards on Sunday for her role as Joan in the company.

In his impassioned acceptance speech, LuPone first thanked the audience before him before expressing his gratitude to his colleagues, which he said was "an honor to work every night."

LuPone continues to thank the behind-the-scenes staff and celebrate "all the backups on all the New York stages and all the COVID security personnel"—both groups that helped bring Broadway back after 18 months of the closure of the coronavirus pandemic.

The star finished her message, adding: "Love you all. Thank you." LuPone won Janet Bayardel (Girl on the North Side), Shoshana Bean (Mr. Saturday Night), Jane Howdisel (The Music Man), and L Morgan Lee (A Strange Loop), as well as her company partner Jennifer Simard.

This is LuPone's third Tony, having previously won the Best Actress Award in a Musical for her roles in Evita (1980) and Gypsy (2008).

This nomination is also LuPone's eighth career award for theater's most significant honor, in addition to his two wins.

The company has nine Tonys, including one for Best Musical Awakening. Directed by Marian Elliott, who also won Sunday Night, the production received acclaim for George Firth's gender-skewed storytelling and, for the first time, chose a woman (Tony Katrina Lenk winner) to play the lead role of Bobby. Academy Award winner and former Tony nominee Ariana DeBois host, the 75th show, streaming coast-to-coast live from New York's legendary Radio City Music Hall on CBS and Paramount+.

In the Best New Musical category, the coveted is Girl from the North Country, MJ The Musical, Mr. Saturday Night, Paradise Square, SIX: The Musical, and A Strange Loop compete for the grand prize.

Angela Lansbury also received the 2022 Special Tony Award for Theatrical Achievement, marking her sixth Tony.

The 2022 Tony Awards are broadcast live at Radio City Music Hall in New York on CBS and Paramount+.
