WNBA star and Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner has been accused by Russian prosecutors of transporting "large quantities" of marijuana, according to Russian media, during his first court appearance on Friday.

Griner, 31, was taken to a courtroom in Khimki on the outskirts of Moscow, handcuffed and wearing a Jimi Hendrix T-shirt. Once inside, he was confined in a cage with a bottle of water and a bag of biscuits, according to Russian media reports, The Washington Post reported.

According to reports, prosecutors summoned two witnesses during the trial; It was customs agents who searched Griner's bag when he was first arrested on February 17, Griner's lawyer Alexander Boykov told reporters.

Greener was not asked if he was innocent or guilty, reports NPR. Following Greener's appearance in court, US Deputy Chief of Mission Elizabeth Rudd spoke outside the courthouse and emphasized that "the Russian Federation has wrongly arrested Ms. Greener."

Rudd also said he "had the opportunity to speak to Ms. Greener in the courtroom."

"He is fine in this difficult situation and has asked me to let him know that he is in good spirits and holds to his beliefs," Rudd said. Griner's trial comes more than four months after his arrest. The WNBA star was arrested at Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport on February 17 after officers allegedly found a vape cartridge containing hash oil, a substance illegal in Russia, in his luggage.

The US State Department later officially classified Greener wrongfully detained by the Russian Federation.

"Our position on this issue has been apparent for some time. Brittney Griner shouldn't have been arrested. He should not have been detained another day," State Department spokesman Ned Price said at a June 14 news conference.
