Edward Enninful, the former Editor in Chief of British Vogue, has commented on the recent controversy surrounding actress Sydney Sweeney’s advertisement for American Eagle jeans, viewing it through the lens of a concerning shift in the fashion industry. The advertisement, which featured Sweeney alongside the line, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” was met with a significant online backlash. Critics interpreted the word "jeans" as a pun on "genes," suggesting the campaign was promoting a racially and physically superior white beauty ideal a concept that has been labeled as promoting eugenics and contributing to a backlash against diversity in fashion.

A Divided Public Interpretation

Enninful, who recently launched his new inclusive media platform, EE72, addressed the issue while discussing his fears that the fashion world is retreating from the diversity gains made over the last decade. He observed that the public reaction to the Sweeney advertisement was profoundly polarized, reflecting the current cultural and political climate.

In his commentary, Enninful acknowledged the potential for a misinterpretation that could “trigger some people.” He stated that while he personally thought "people really read into it probably deeper than I would have," he understood the underlying concerns. The controversy highlighted a broader tension where, as Enninful suggests, “if you have a blonde woman sitting there talking about her jeans, it will trigger some people,” demonstrating how divided the population is on matters of representation and body image.

The Wider Trend of Retreated Diversity

Enninful connected the Sweeney controversy to a larger, more worrisome trend within the industry, which he describes as an “anti woke” moment. He fears that fashion is risking a regression toward its old norms, where “one type is the norm, being European is the norm, being super thin is the norm.” This is a significant point for Enninful, a Ghanaian born British editor and stylist who spent his tenure at British Vogue championing a massive increase in diversity across all aspects of the magazine, from models and photographers to subject matter.

The former editor believes that the societal and political environment has made "woke" a “dirty word,” leading to a cultural moment where anything not deemed the traditional norm is seen as wrong. He stressed that promoting an inclusive view of beauty, such as celebrating different body types or people from diverse backgrounds, is simply about reflecting the world and should not be politicized or dismissed. He argues that the fashion industry, currently "in flux," must clearly determine "where we stand and what we stand for" as it navigates this period of cultural tension.
