The terrible fire left Charlie Xavier with third-degree burns covering 85% of his body and fighting for his life - now, he wants to inspire others to survive.

Charlie Xavier remembers every detail of the morning of September 10, 2021, when the life he knew was changed forever.

The mother-of-two, London, 4, and Julien, nine months, left her home in Charlottesville, Virginia, before dawn for a quick trip to Patch Brewing Co., a brewery she and her husband Andre have been hoping to open for days.

Charlie is determined to finish the board table to go to the children's playground. Still, within minutes of sanding the wooden frame, he falls and sends the electric sander to the ground, vaporizing it and causing a massive explosion. "Suddenly, my whole body was on fire," recalls Charlie, 36, who managed to walk a few steps onto the gravel before falling and rolling several times, putting out the fire. "I just sang 'Help, Lord.' Let me live."

He was taken to VCU Health's Evans-Haynes Burn Center in Richmond, Virginia, with third-degree burns covering 85% of his body. It would be ten months before he finally returned to his family.

For the first few days after the incident, Andre didn't know if his 14-year-old wife would be able to handle it.

"Doctors told me that his body was fighting as hard as possible to stay alive. "The whole world just stopped," he told news. "I tried to speak, and I just froze."

After a few moments of touching and exiting the burn center - and a 3% chance of survival - Charlie's condition stabilizes. He underwent 54 operations before being transferred to rehab in March and forced to walk, eat and talk again. The only thing she gets sick every day is thinking about her son and being able to go home to them until his birthday on June 6.
