Paul Pelosis' blood alcohol level was 0.082 percent at the time of his arrest in late May, officials said
Paul Pelosi, husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has been formally charged with two counts of drunk driving and causing injury, the Napa District Attorney's Office said in a news release Thursday.
The allegations stem from a May 28 car crash involving Pelosi, 82. While trying to cross State Road 29, a 2021 Porsche belonging to Mr. Pelosi was hit by a jeep north in 2014, according to CNN, citing a California Highway Patrol clash report that said no one was injured and that the jeep's driver had not been arrested.
"The charges brought today include driving under the influence of alcohol, causing injury, and driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.08% or more that resulted in the injury," the statement said, noting that charges fall under California law can be charged as either crime or as a crime. At the time of the incident, a blood sample taken from Pelosi and sent to the California Department of Justice for testing showed her blood alcohol level was 0.082 percent, according to the report.
"Based on the extent of the injuries sustained by the victim, the prosecution has filed charges. This decision is consistent with the way our office handles cases of such misconduct," the statement said.
News request for comment from a spokesman for Mr Pelosis was not immediately answered. He is scheduled to appear in the Napa County Supreme Court on August 3.
During her arrest, a spokeswoman for Ms. Pelosi, a California Democrat, told news, "A spokeswoman will not comment on personal matters that arose while she was on the East Coast."
She and Mr Pelosi, a San Francisco-based entrepreneur who owns an investment, real estate, and venture capital advisory firm, married in 1963 and have five children together.
