The United States has revoked the visa of Colombian President Gustavo Petro over what the State Department described as "reckless and incendiary actions" and remarks made during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. The highly unusual and significant diplomatic move follows the leftist leader's participation in a pro-Palestinian protest where he publicly urged American military personnel to disobey orders from US President Donald Trump and accused the US leader of complicity in genocide in Gaza. This revocation marks a severe escalation of already strained relations between Washington and Bogotá, two long standing allies in the fight against narcotics.

The controversial remarks were delivered by President Petro at a demonstration outside the UN headquarters. Speaking through a translator, the Colombian President directly addressed American soldiers, stating, "I ask all the soldiers of the United States' army, don't point your rifles against humanity" and "disobey the orders of Trump Obey the order of humanity." These comments, particularly the call for military insubordination, were immediately met with sharp condemnation from the US State Department which announced the visa cancellation via social media. The Department cited the remarks as urging US soldiers to "disobey orders and incite violence."
Upon returning to Bogotá, President Petro confirmed he learned of the visa revocation, but appeared unfazed, stating he did not care about the punishment because he also holds European citizenship, which would allow him to travel to the US without a visa. He also hit back at the US administration, accusing it of violating diplomatic immunity norms essential for the functioning of the United Nations. Petro argued that the US action, alongside denying visas to Palestinian officials, demonstrated a failure to comply with international law.
This latest development deepens a series of recent diplomatic clashes between the two nations. Earlier in the week at the UN General Assembly, President Petro had already demanded a criminal investigation of President Trump over US missile strikes on suspected drug trafficking boats in the Caribbean, which Petro claimed killed unarmed, poor young people. Furthermore, the Trump administration had recently placed Colombia on a list of countries deemed as not fully cooperating with counter narcotics efforts, a clear rebuke to the Petro government. The revocation of the visa underscores a new low point in US Colombia ties, signaling increasing political friction between the administration of the former rebel and the Republican government in Washington. The diplomatic fallout has seen even more action with Colombia's Foreign Minister "renouncing" her US visa in solidarity, suggesting a growing willingness by Bogotá to confront Washington.
