Colorado Avalanche is back to being champions for the first time in more than two decades.
On Sunday, the Avalanche beat two-time defender Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 to win the 2022 Stanley Cup Final. They now have three Stanley Cup titles in their history, having won in 1996 and 2001.
Colorado ended Tampa Bay's bid to win three straight Stanley Cups with the win, a feat only the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Islanders could match well before the current salary cap.
Avalanche won the series' first two games, including a 7-0 win over Tampa Bay in Game 2. Lightning won her first game of the series in Game 3, beating Colorado 6-2 but lost three games in one after she had three lost to 3.2 in Match 4 on Wednesday night. Tampa extended its record on Friday, but Colorado ended it with a 2-1 win on Sunday.
Avalanche center Nazem Kadri, sent off after thumb surgery, returned to the team for Match 4 and scored the winner.
"[It was] a train at the amusement park," Kadri said after the game, according to the Washington Post. "To think I'm done and then have the glimmer of hope to sit here now is a bit surreal. I'm excited to rejoin the team and be in the dressing room. That's what I've been waiting for my whole life, so it's nice to be back in the squad. ." Lawine captain Gabriel Landeskog added: "You knew [the staff] wasn't going to come easy. It inspired everyone to see his teammates try to come back and fight every day to try and get better, and he's finally back in the squad. No doubt interesting to us and gave us a different perspective. You can't find these things. Great in the sequel and great to watch."
However, Game 4 did not end without controversy.
According to USA Today, social media fans quickly point out that Colorado had too many players on the ice when Kadri scored the winner - something Lightning coach John Cooper alluded to in his post-match conference.
