A minor mishap involving President Donald Trump and a stalled escalator at the United Nations headquarters in New York has become a subject of international debate, with the UN now providing an official explanation. The incident occurred as Trump and First Lady Melania Trump stepped onto an escalator en route to the General Assembly. The machine abruptly stopped, prompting a swift demand from the White House for an investigation into what it suspected was a deliberate act. The UN, however, has stated that the malfunction was not an act of sabotage but was instead caused by a safety mechanism.

According to a statement from UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, an investigation into the incident, which included a readout of the escalator's central processing unit, concluded that a built in safety mechanism was inadvertently triggered. The mechanism, designed to prevent people or objects from being pulled into the escalator's gearing, was tripped at the top of the escalator. The culprit, according to the UN, was a videographer from the US delegation. The videographer was walking backward up the escalator to film the couple's arrival and may have accidentally triggered the safety function.

While the UN has called the incident an accident, the White House has expressed a far more serious view. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt took to social media to state, "If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately." Her comments followed reports from the British newspaper, The Times, which claimed that UN staff members had joked about shutting down elevators and escalators to make Trump use the stairs. This fueled speculation that the incident was a deliberate attempt to humiliate the President amidst ongoing tensions over US funding to the UN.

The escalator incident, along with a separate teleprompter malfunction during Trump's speech, became a talking point during his address to the General Assembly. Trump himself joked about the incidents, saying that the two things he got from the United Nations were "a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter." He also praised the First Lady's physical fitness, quipping that she would have fallen if she wasn't "in great shape." Despite the President's lighthearted remarks, the White House's official response underscores the seriousness with which they viewed the matter. The UN, for its part, has denied any foul play and has stated that the teleprompter issue was also the responsibility of the White House, as the US delegation operates its own teleprompter. The incident has highlighted the underlying friction between the US administration and the UN, with both sides presenting different narratives.
